Interior is accessible through a removable panel. On composition: Each combination of speakers will play a number of audio files consisting of field recording, modular synthesis, experimental sound design, and occasional musical instrumentation.&nbsp; While groupings of “files” are written and arranged to be played in tandem, they each start whenever their respective cabinet is plugged in, so the compositions are innately variable.&nbsp; “File” durations range from 45 min - 1 hour. On arrangement: The combination and location of speakers can change the overall effect of the sound work; it can be enveloping and immersive, function as a single source object / sculpture, or interact with the works of other artists.&nbsp; The size of the cabinets can also have an influence on the space and vice versa – small spaces require small speakers, etc.&nbsp; Scaling the work up or down changes the dynamics of the space, as well as the sound itself.&nbsp; On narrative: The sound is culled together from many sources to create auditory spaces that trigger emotional responses in the same way that film music and sound design do.&nbsp; Generally the work is in a limited dynamic range, calling to mind warm deep tones of glacial drift.&nbsp; Pieces are inspired by such phenomena and topics as deep time, melting ice caps, hibernation, hypnogogic and dissociative states, and hypothetical landscapes. dir: Robert T Herrera, Gray Picture, St Louis, MO Project Shelved John Kelley 4 · Rigel Reverb Sync001Save for one song, all music was created using a bowed appetizer bowl and pitch shifting.&nbsp; The resulting sound - a haunting tone which sounds almost like feedback - mimics tinnitus, a condition the main character Rigel (a military Veteran) is assumed to have.&nbsp; While the film itself never screened, the bowed-appetizer-bowl /pitch shift is a technique that I use often now, and it shows up in many projects.&nbsp; Performed, Recorded and Mixed in my studio at UTK. Palacios (2017)Original Score, feature-length Narrative dir: Robert T Herrera, Gray Picture, St Louis, MO John Kelley 4 · 10 20John Kelley 4 · 50 23The music for Palacios was written and recorded to be more textural and less melodic, in order to underscore the dialogue without distracting from it.&nbsp; The themes are built from looping vocal samples and guitar harmonics.&nbsp; Many pieces were written prior to the edit being locked, but inspired by conversations with the Director.&nbsp; Performed and Recorded in my studio in Northwest Arkansas.
