The Duplex Across the Street
looping digital animation, 2017

installed: UMW Media Wall, Univ of Mary Washington, Fredericksburg, VA

A wood-paneled wall slowly changes into a darkly psychedelic vision of light and color before returning, illustrating a gradual dissolve of reality into abstraction and back.  This piece was featured in “24 Seconds of Memphis Water” (on the “Objects and Arrangements” page).
Pictured at right is a cropped version on the UMW Media Wall.
3 Image sequences (details) follow.

LEISURE SERVICES
Sam King, Marc Mitchell, John C Kelley
Interactive Sound installation, 2016

installed: Valley of the Vapors, Hot Springs, AR

An embedded Arduino processor inside of the painting plays looping tones that are run through a small guitar amp.  A custom-etched vinyl record spins on a slowly dying turntable, playing a looping section of “silence” on the record.  Guitar and piano strings are stretched inside of the white box, and have an installed guitar pickup.  When standing on the box, the string tension changes and creates a sound run through a customized amplifier.

I Am Here
Cynthia Post-Hunt, Alexander Hanson, John C Kelley
Art Performance with onsite A/M Radio Broadcast and Live Netcast, Lalaland, Fayetteville, AR, 2015

installed: Lalaland, Fayetteville, AR

Inspired by the distress calls sent by Amerlia Earhart and recieved by the USS Itasca, this installation includes an elevated recording booth, barely large enough for one seated performer (Cynthia).  Over the course of 3 hours, the performer repeats the phrase “Where are you”, which is broadcasted in two ways:  a live netcast via the “Periscope” app, and a 9-inch A/M Radio broadcast.

Gertrude Stein Plays Paris
Theatrical Reading with Projections and Sound, 2014

documented: Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Bentonville, AR

Actors read from a script that adapts the works of Gertrude Stein, while interacting with a projection screen.  Original sound and video are triggered by Qlab, to correspond with the live elements.
My responsibilites included the creation of orignal video and sound sequences, as well as filming and editing the actors within the video ”space”, as represented by the wood panelling.  Cues for Qlab were discussed with a proprietary tech crew, who triggered cues during the performance.

Music of Kaija Saariaho and Elliot Carter
Musical Recital with Projections and Sound, 2013

documented: University of Arkansas, Fayetteville AR

Video excerpts from performances at Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall and Lalaland, both in Fayetteville, Arkansas, May 5 & 6, 2013. The performances included pieces by Kaija Saariaho and Elliott Carter performed by Emily Nelson (flute) and Elizabeth Lee (cello) with accompanying video works by John C. Kelley and Sam King.
